The company achieved legendary status through radical design innovation. In 1884, they launched the famous Kangaroo dwarf safety bicycle. Later, they patented their signature helical steel tubing. These bikes were so revolutionary they earned royal patronage. The Prince of Wales personally rode a Royal Premier. At its peak, Premier operated factories in both Germany and Imperial Japan.
However, the twentieth century brought massive industrial shifts. Premier expanded production into powerful motorcycles in 1908. During World War I, they built vital three-speed military motorbikes. They supplied these vehicles directly to the British War Office. Unfortunately, this wartime pivot severely strained their international business.
Severe post-war financial struggles forced a sudden corporate sale. Singer Motors purchased the entire Coventry company in 1920. Singer briefly produced unique Premier cyclecars to stay competitive. The iconic Premier Bicycle trademark was permanently retired in 1927.
